Related Texts
As part of your response to this module, you will be expected to have a knowledge of your core text (Billy Elliot) AS WELL AS additional text that also explore ideas associated with growing up and individuals attempting to move or transition 'into the world'. In your HSC response, you will be expected to write about Billy Elliot and show your understanding of how other texts link to Billy Elliot and the concept of 'into the world'.
It is important that you begin to gather your related texts early and that you aim for variety in both the content and the form. For example, your related texts should not consist of just films, nor should you have a number of texts that deal with the same ideas of 'into the world', such as Pygmalion, My Fair Lady and Educating Rita, all of which have a plotline that focuses on a young females journey into the world of higher society through education. Ultimately, your related texts should be a collection of texts that reflects your deep understanding of the issues associated with the concept 'Into The World' from a number of varying perspectives.
Many students ask how many related texts they need. As a bare minimum you should have two. There have been past papers that have specified that students should refer to TWO (2) related texts. Most ask that students refer to AT LEAST one (1) related text. In short, having a deep knowledge of two related texts gives you the ability to choose between the two in the HSC and perhaps select one that is a 'better fit' to the question. However, to really give yourself choice it is recommended that you have three (3). This way you have the ultimate choice in the HSC, and are better able to provide your best answer to the question you are given.
